Growing Alfalfa Sprouts For Your Health

You've probably seen alfalfa sprouts at the grocery store or in a salad bar. You may have even tried them in a sandwich or on a salad. But what do you really know about sprouts.

The most popular sprouts have been alfalfa sprouts and bean sprouts. You can also find radish sprouts, broccoli sprouts, and sunflower sprouts at many local grocery and health food stores. In actuality any seed, grain, bean, and nut can be sprouted as long as it hasn't been pasteurized.

You can find alfalfa seeds at a local coop or health food store. You can also order sprouting supplies online. Alfalfa seeds cost between 2 and 5 dollars per pound. One pound of seed will grow between 8 and 10 pounds of sprouts. If you can, get organic seed.

Growing your own sprouts is a relatively simple process. The first step you will take is to soak 1 tablespoon of alfalfa seed in a quart jar for about 4 hours. Find a cover for your jar. I recommend a clean old nylon and a rubber band to secure it to the jar. You can also buy a ready made lid just for sprouting.

After you've soaked the seed you will want to rinse it several times to remove any contaminates. Now the sprouting begins. Place the jar at an angle so any excess water can drain out. Make sure it is in a secure place. If you can, place the jar in the dark.

Rinse the now growing sprouts at least twice a day. This is a very important step to insure a nice healthy crop. Don't forget or they will dry out and you will have to start all over. Within 5 to 7 days you will have a quart jar full of healthy delicious alfalfa sprouts. Rinse and repeat.

You can have a fresh healthy supply or alfalfa sprouts all year round. Considering the fact that sprouts can cost more than $4 per pound at the store you can save a bundle of money too.

Not only are sprouts easy to grow, they are a powerhouse of healthy nutrition. It is at the sprouting stage that a plant has its greatest nutritional value. As the plant continues to grow the concentrated food value of the sprout diminishes.

Alfalfa sprouts are the most nutritious of sprouts. They are very high in protein. A 4 oz. serving has 5 grams of protein. They are also very high in vitamin C, the B vitamins, and minerals. In fact pound for pound alfalfa sprouts have the highest nutritional value for any fruit or vegetable you will find in the produce department of any grocery store.

Since sprouts are a live food they also offer the benefits of living enzymes. In a world full of over cooked over processed foods, living enzymes are a rare commodity. Living enzymes are very important for a healthy body.

Alfalfa sprouts are a dieters best friend also. They are the perfect food to compliment a weight loss program. They are low in calories, high in nutrition, and high in fiber. What more could you ask for!

Alfalfa sprouts should be a part of every persons diet on a regular basis. Do your body a favor and eat some sprouts today.

Eating Gluten Free Need Not Be Hard

If you are newly diagnosed as either being celiac or just intolerant to gluten, you need to get organized as soon as possible so that you have something in your store cupboard. If you don't, you will stand gazing at your cupboard and get depressed very quickly at all the things you can't eat. That's when you will crumble and grab something you shouldn't like the half pack of chocolate biscuits of your flat mates. Get organized now!

To start, if you are sharing a cupboard with gluten eaters, designate yourself some space for your gluten free food, maybe a whole shelf at eye level. You won't be tempted by gluten foods quite the same if you don't notice them each time you open the cupboard.

Make your shopping list for staples such as gluten free pasta, gluten free bread and gluten free stock etc right away. Don't forget to get some gluten free treats such as biscuits and crackers to ease you into the new diet with out too much sacrifice. Don't over do the treats though, you don't want to necessarily gain weight.

Find some support locally. You will be surprised how many people share the same diet as you for various reasons. Talk to your friends and acquaintances, look for your local celiac group or set a group up of your own. There are also plenty of websites offering support and forums.

Don't forget to organize yourself at work. If you have morning tea with your colleagues, don't feel left out when you can't eat their cake, just take your own. The same for lunch, try keeping tinned tuna and pre cooked rice in the office refrigerator, or buy a small toaster to toast your gluten free bread in. Everyone knows the bread is the worst part, but toast is good.

Talk to your local sushi bar and find out what they don't put soya sauce or malt vinegar in. The sushi itself is good and healthy, but not with soy sauce on. It contains wheat and will probably upset your system again.

Whilst there are not many fast food outlets that carry gluten free foods, see who does near you. Subway do salads, but no gluten free bread. KFC is definitely NOT gluten free, even though it's chicken, there is wheat in the coating. Be warned.

That should keep you on track for the first few weeks until you find your feet. Don't get hungry, keep a gluten free bar nearby in your bag in case you get stuck one day.

By following the diet and not straying, you will begin to heal any damage that you may have had by following a gluten diet.

Growing Organic Vegetables

Many people know about the benefits of eating organic fruit and vegetables. However, not many people regularly eat organic food. The biggest disincentive is usually the price. Organic veggies are invariably a lot more expensive at the local supermarket. The good news is that anybody with even a modest vegetable garden can grow healthy organic vegetables for a much lower cost than they would buy off the shelf.

Nevertheless, some people avoid growing their own vegetables because they are running short on space, time and the know-how to tend a successful veggie patch. However, organic gardening isn’t as difficult as many people think.

Mulching is one of the main secrets. The regular incorporation of old organic matter helps keep the soil functioning well. Mulching helps the soil retain moisture, suppresses weeds, reduces temperature fluctuations, and can prevent soil crusting. Many organic gardeners find that plant disease problems decline as the health of the soil improves.

Of course, the main reason for growing organically is to avoid the use of chemicals and commercially produced fertilizers and pesticides. Again, this helps to maintain a healthy soil across numerous growing seasons. More importantly, you can be sure that the food your family is eating is free of pesticides and herbicides. While avoiding synthetic chemicals, many organic gardeners approve of and use sprays and other preparations containing naturally occurring materials. Other pest control methods include the use of mechanical devices such as traps. Another favorite is to encourage other animals, which like to eat the pests, to the garden.

For city dwellers who have more enthusiasm than space, container gardening may be the answer. Many herbs and vegetables can be grown quite successfully in containers. These include carrots, radishes and lettuce, as well as crops that bear fruit over a long period of time, such as tomatoes and peppers. No matter what you grow it is important to remember that drainage is extremely important. Another possibility if space is at a premium is to grow herbs and vegetables amongst your flower garden.

You never know, if the prices of organic produce remains high and concerns about food safety grow you might be able to convert that backyard vegetable patch into an income earner as well. For those less entrepreneurial, there is the opportunity to work on projects, such as neighborhood food growing, in order to benefit the whole community. At the very least, home grown vegetables definitely taste better.

Is it Possible to Maintain a Nutritious Diet While on Vacation?

Sticking to a nutritious diet while vacationing can be one of the most difficult things to do. After all, a vacation is for having fun and that includes eating good food! However, if you learn how to make smart choices, a nourishing diet is really not that difficult when you're away from home. This is probably not the best time in which to start a healthy diet, but if you are currently making healthy choices in your foods already, modifying your diet slightly to accommodate traveling is not as hard as it may seem.

If you are vacationing on an airplane, a wholesome diet may have to include airplane food, which may be a challenge, depending on the selection. When you book your flight, ask about your food options and ask if a vegetarian dish is available. Vegetarian dishes are sometimes more nutritional in this case, but it really depends on what they will be serving. If you can, eat a larger meal before your flight so that you don't have to eat the entire meal that is served to feel full.

When driving or taking a bus or metro, you may be tempted to stop at fast food restaurants and eat the foods found there. Avoid this whenever possible. If you're on vacation, you may want to splurge a little bit, but having fast food more than once during a week can really be bad for your health. If you must, choose the healthiest options available, like chicken breasts and herbal tea.

Also remember that you can take your own meals when vacationing. Carrying a loaf of whole wheat bread or pita wraps, some lean turkey, and low fat cheese in a cooler is a great way to avoid high fat and high cholesterol junk food meals. These are much better choices and you'll save a lot of money as well. Call ahead to be sure there will be a refrigerator in your hotel room.

Lastly, make smart choices when you eat out. If you choose salads or pasta, get the dressing on the side and ask about low-carb options. In fact, many places print these dieting options directly in the menu for the health conscious people. To control your portions order lunch menu sizes or split the meal in half and get a take-out bag, and you'll be well on your way to nutritious eating, even away from home.

Yes, eating healthy foods when on vacation can be a challenge. However, your health is worth it. When you eat wholesome foods, you will also fight illnesses that you are likely to encounter when vacationing and be more attentive so that you can enjoy your trip. So eat well, relax and have a great time!

The Benefits Of Juicing

Everyone should include at least one fresh juice in their diet every day and until you have tried it you won't believe how delicious it tastes: Raw, live, fresh fruit and vegetables have so many beneficial effects on the body. Fresh juice can be made in your own home or purchased from a café and the health benefits far outweigh those offered by pre-bottled juice.

A fresh juice is made using a juice extractor: This is a blender like processor that removes the pulp and filters about 90% of the liquid matter into a cup or jug. Fruits and vegetables commonly used for fresh juice include:

- Oranges
- Apples
- Watermelons / Melon Dews/ Rock melons
- Pears
- Strawberries
- Carrots
- Spinach
- Beetroots

Many people also like to include a small amount of fresh ginger or garlic for an added immune system boost. Depending on your individual taste preferences, different combinations can be used for creating unique flavors. Some juicers will take a whole granny smith apple without requiring any coring, where others need fruit and vegetables to be chopped into smaller pieces so they can fit through.

It's fairly common knowledge now days that the human body is comprised of at least 70% water and drinking fresh juice is a sure way to stay hydrated. Each piece of fruit and vegetables is also around 70% water content, but the water is vitamin and nutrient rich for quick and effective assimilation into the body. Fresh juice will give you an energy surge and it will carry vital vitamins and nutrients to cells throughout the body the way nature intended it to.

Can you imagine heaping an apple, an orange, a ¼ watermelon, ½ a beetroot, a slice of ginger and a carrot onto a plate and eating it all raw in one sitting? You could probably do it but it would be hard work! With fresh juice you can easily extract the goodness into a tumbler, throw in a couple of ice cubes if you like your drinks cold and you have a delicious and healthy drink, which is also a meal. When you drink the juice form of the fruit and vegetables you are receiving highly concentrated nutrition, which means the amount it would normally take to fill you up wouldn't have anywhere near as much goodness.

There are so many health benefits to drinking fresh juice it would be impossible to list them all. Many people like drinking fruit and vegetable juice to detoxify their bodies for a few days every month or a day or two a week: This means they have nothing but fresh juices, fruit, fresh vegetables and water for the detoxification period. Since the enzymes in the fruit and vegetables are still buzzing in their uncooked form, fresh juice is pure energy to support our natural life force. While cooked, dried fruits and vegetables have nutritional value; it is small in comparison to fresh juice.

Whether you drink one juice a day or several you will notice changes after a week or so: your skin will be smoother, glowing and clear, your eyes will be bright and your body will feel clean. You will have elevated moods and energy levels compared to before and your appetite will possibly decrease because you are receiving all the vitamins and nourishment you require for the first time in a long time. Hair, nails and your immune system will all be noticeably stronger and you will feel calm and surprisingly at ease. Over time your digestion will improve, your bowel flora will re-balance and you could possibly cure any disease or illness in your body.

A good way to start with fresh juice, is to do a detoxification for a day or two initially to clean your system out and relax your digestion. Then you can start your new routine of having one fresh juice first thing each morning or perhaps even one with breakfast and lunch, whichever you prefer.

This is not a change you will ever regret and you will start to look more seriously at all the beverages you consume as you come to realize how beneficial a fresh juice can actually be to your health.

Super Nutritious Foods for Perfect Health

What is the definition of a Super Food? Basically, super foods are foods that contain unusually high levels of two or more nutrients not found in mainstream foods. The ratio between nutrients available and caloric count is unusually high.

If you include any two of the food groups mentioned in this article, you could live out your life in glowing good health, at least nutritionally. There are many other foods that could fit into this group, but according to the world's great diets, such as the Mediterranean and Japanese diets, to name just two, these foods are a common denominator, consumed by the healthiest people worldwide and are readily available.

The first food in this super group is definitely cold-water seafood, specifically salmon, sardines and tuna. These fishes are extremely rich in the fatty acids DHA and EPA Omega 3, which for one thing is essential for optimal brain health. The brain is about 60% fat. The membranes of neurons, specialized brain cells that form the nucleus for all thought and communication are composed of two layers of fatty acid molecules. Fatty Omegas are used to build and protect neurons, keeping the brain well lubed and running at peak performance,

Also, fatty omegas have been shown to control the bad cholesterols in the blood stream, aiding in cardiovascular health. There are other numerous benefits, far too many to list in an article.

The next group is Nuts, such as walnuts, peanuts, macadamias and most other nuts. Nuts are loaded with Omega fatty acids as well as phytonutrients, needed for cellular health and metabolism. Just 5 small handfuls of nuts per week, especially walnuts, have been shown to improve cholesterol levels from 15% to over 40%. That beats most drugs and it's safer too.

The Berry family, especially blueberries, are extremely high in vitamins and antioxidants, antioxidants being essential in controlling free radicals, nasty little compounds that eventually destroy cell walls, contributing to aging and a whole host of illnesses. Berries are also high in water and low in calories, making them a great choice for your waistline.

Whole Grains are definitely in the super food category. You've probably heard the old adage that "Bread is the staff of Life"? It's not hard to see why as whole grains are excellent sources of B vitamins as well as E, folic acid, magnesium, iron, fiber and antioxidants, even more so than some fruits and vegetables.
Whole wheat, brown rice, wild rice and popcorn, yes popcorn, are good examples of whole grains.

Legumes or Beans are nutritional powerhouses in every sense. If you think about it, beans are seeds, containing the genetic code and all of the chemicals and nutrients to produce a plant. To start, beans are loaded with high quality protein and amino acids with a low caloric count. Toss in B vitamins, folate, magnesium, potassium and most other trace minerals and large amounts of fiber as well as hundreds of phytonutrients and you may have the super food A list with beans alone.

A quick note to vegans. Traditionally, the best sources of Amino acids, full spectrum, along with Omega acids and protein have been animal products. But if you combine a grain, corn for instance along with a legume, peas for example, you will get high quality proteins without the cholesterol as well as the valuable Omegas and full range of Antioxidants. To your health!

Smart Foods

Eat your spinach is now more of a poignant phrase then ever before. Food has been liked to helping your body in many positive ways. Food has also been linked to hurting your body in ways such as calories, fat, and cholesterol. Now food is being linked to helping your brain stay young and healthy. Everyone could use some brain protection, especially if you're in school and relying on the brain to deliver you that degree you've been seeking. This article looks at a few specific foods that helps the brain.

Blueberries have always found their way into tasty pies, muffins, and desserts, but are now recognized as one of the leading brain foods. Blueberries are loaded with antioxidants that can help improve memory, and coordination. Blueberries also contain chemicals that lower blood pressure, this cuts the chances of a stroke occurring. Wild blueberries are suggested as the most potent blueberries with such ingredients.

Salmon has always been a favorite of the wild bears of Alaska, and it's about to become one of yours too. Salmon contains omega-3 the fatty acids that can help protect the brain. With high levels of omega-3 in the blood, studies show that higher levels of seratonin occur. This seratonin gives the brain a natural mood enhancer. But don't eat Salmon just to smile more, seratonin also causes the brain's nerves to communicate more, thus enhancing the brains abilities towards memory, and learning. Just don't go into the stream like the bears, because eating Salmon won't make you smart enough to get out of that situation.

On a cold winter day nothing is as good for you as a cup of hot cocoa, otherwise known as hot chocolate. To add incentive to an already pleasure filled delight, scientists have discovered that hot cocoa has 5 times the antioxidants as most drinks, such as black tea. The reason these antioxidants are so important is that they can help prevent Alzheimer's and other mind altering diseases. One tip is to make sure you heat up 100% pure cocoa rather than using concentrated store bought mixes that are made of less healthy ingredients.

When you're eating out at your local restaurant tell them you'd like a fruit salad with blueberries for an appetizer, salmon for dinner, and hot cocoa for dessert. You'll feel smart, and healthy for doing it.

Get lots of antioxidants, vitamins and phyto-nutrients by simply drinking an ounce or two a day of mangosteen juice. You'll feel great!

Aloe Vera: the Ancient Modern Wonder Treatment

When you suffer from sunburn, snap a piece of aloe vera. If you're bothered by acid reflux, take a little aloe vera juice. When it comes to soothing the body inside and out, aloe vera is the new wonder drug; but there's nothing new about this ancient medical secret.

The aloe vera plant has given us many popular herbal remedies. A native African plant, aloe vera plant is known as "lily of the desert", "plant of immortality" and of course, "medicine plant." The name aloe is derived from the Arabic word "alloeh", meaning "bitter taste".

Aloe Vera Herb

Aloe vera is one of about 400 known species grown under the family known as "asphodelaceae". Classified as a succulent plant, aloe is naturally grown in the more arid areas of Africa, as well as in the mountainous zones of tropical Africa. The aloe vera plant, which is considered by many to be an herb, is distinguished by the large, thick, fleshy leaves. These leaves are shaped like lances, have sharp apexes and spines lining their margins.

Early Applications

As early as 1500 BC, Egyptians have noted the use of the aloe vera plant as treatment for burns, infections, and parasites.

Aloe Believed to Aid Healing

Evidently, the juice of the plant leaves yields certain substances, called aloes, which are good purgatives. Some species of the aloe, like Aloe venenosa, may produce poisonous juice and are therefore not recommended. However, most species, such as the A. vera, vulgaris, socotrina, chinensis, and perryi contain aloes that have therapeutic uses.

Thorough research has been done on the aloe vera plant since the 1930s. Studies indicate that the clear gel of the aloe vera herbal plant has a dramatic ability to heal wounds, ulcers, and burns. By coating the affected areas with the gel-like substance, the wound is safeguarded from infection-causing bacteria and other micro bodies, thus speeding up the healing rate.

Juice from Aloe Vera

The aloe vera plant, like most succulents, contains about 96 percent water. The remaining 4 percent of aloe vera is a combination of active ingredients including amino acids, enzymes, essential oils, glycoproteins, minerals and vitamins. Because of the many active constituents present in the aloe vera plant, modern healers often implement it into their liquid health treatments. Juice from the aloe vera is usually combined with other medicinal plants to increase its potency. Those who use aloe vera juice believe that it is able to relieve digestive tract irritations caused by colitis, peptic ulcers and other disorders.

Herbal Supplements

The many naturally-occurring vitamins and minerals make aloe vera the ideal herbal food supplement. It helps aid digestion, and can assist in lymphatic and blood circulation. Aloe vera herbal supplements are also believed to improve liver, kidney and gall bladder functions.

With at least three fatty acids, the aloe vera plant also presents anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, aloe vera herbal supplements can be helpful for those with colon, stomach and small intestine difficulties. By naturally alkalizing digestive juices and preventing excess stomach acids, aloe vera supplements can help to prevent these common causes of indigestion.

Next time you're feeling discomfort, inside or out, reach for a piece of aloe. It's an easy-to-grow plant that looks beautiful in the bathroom, so keep one in a pot and have those remarkable healing properties at hand, any time you need them.

Do I really have to eat healthy?

Healthy eating is the basis of good health and is a key element in healthy human development, from the prenatal and early childhood years to adulthood. Healthy eating is equally important in reducing the risk of many chronic diseases and is critical to your children's wellbeing. It is generally agreed that it is best to stick to basic dietary principles of eating less, do more exercise, eat fruits and vegetables and whole grains and avoid too much junk food.

So what are the benefits of healthy eating? Well, here are a few:

Cancer Prevention

It's long been believed that eating the "right" foods is more likely to prevent cancer: this includes eating more fruit and vegetables which are full of antioxidants (thought to have cancer-fighting properties), eating low fat and high fiber foods. Although there is no shortage of media reports that bad diets cause cancer and good diets prevent cancer, the link between diet and cancer is a little tenuous; however, new studies are coming out saying that women that eat a diet low in meat with lots of fruit decrease their risk for breast cancer and colon cancer.

Fruit and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are almost always low in calories and fat, and they are generally very nutritious as well. Fruits and vegetables are advisable for healthy snacking instead of sugar-based products. 7 servings of fruits and vegetables a day is generally recommended as a good balance. Fiber is found in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains and helps keep healthy bowels.

Energy

For people who have to leave early for work, have a heavy schedule, and then have a demanding family, they often find that their energy levels drop and they don't feel capable of additional exercise. Minerals and Vitamins such as iron and B12 give you energy to get through the day. Select foods that will meet your needs of energy and essential nutrients.

Sugary drinks are a big source of empty energy. Healthy eating increases energy, improves the way your body functions, strengthens your immune system and delays weight gain.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol is present in all parts of the body, including the brain, nerves, muscle, skin, liver, intestines, and heart. Cholesterol travels in your blood in packages called lipoproteins. Not all cholesterol is actually bad for you - it is a natural substance that serves as a building block for cells and hormones and helps to carry fat through the blood vessels for use or storage in other parts of the body; however, a high blood cholesterol level can lead to a build-up of plaque in your arteries, which can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke. Certain types of fiber (e.g. oats) can help to lower cholesterol and to keep blood sugar levels normal.

Meals

Believe it or not, 3 meals and 2 snacks are best to maintain both energy levels and healthy weight. You are more likely to overeat or choose nutrition-poor foods when you skip meals and are over-hungry. Try to relax and pace yourself so that your meals last at least 20 minutes, since it takes 20 minutes for you to feel full. It's hard to compete against fast-food kid's meals which are fatty, salty, served quickly, packaged in bright colors and they come with toys.

There seems to be a common belief that it costs more to buy healthy foods. The author firmly believes that this is a fallacy. Using the economy of seasonal shopping, fruit and vegetables can be very cheap and go a long way to filling you up; with some careful planning you can produce exciting, cheap meals that are also good for you.

Preventing Cold and Flu Viruses

Cold and flu germs are inhaled with every breath we take. Even in the warm and sunny months of the year, these germs are taken in. So why do we continually get colds and flu? Our body's immune system works hard to try and fight off these unwanted cold and flu viruses.

When a person gets sick, they slow down and will more than likely stay home in hope that they will get better and be able to return to their daily activities soon.

Is it just bad luck that a person can get a cold or flu as many people think? Well, extensive research tells us differently. It has been proven that some things can be done to prevent cold and flu viruses. Becoming a willing host is not one of them.

For the immune system to become stronger, there are four key categories to consider: Sleep, nutrition, exercise and stress management.

If a person loses sleep their body is unable to repair and restore all of its functions, including the immune system. We all know this from first-hand experience: just a couple of poor nights sleep and before you know it, we find ourselves fighting off a sore throat or cold. This is what is known as being a willing host.

Foods can contribute significantly to better immune function. All the necessary anti-oxidants can be found in fresh fruits and vegetables. Chicken soup, garlic, green tea, mushrooms and cayenne pepper are all recommended for preventing and fighting off cold and flu viruses.

Several herbal supplements and naturopathic remedies stimulate immune system function. Ginseng and Echinacea have been found to be of benefit after being tested in several clinical trials. These products are very well known because they have a good reputation for working, and they are available in health food stores and pharmacies.

There are other nutritional products that can be beneficial in preventing cold and flu viruses. They are vitamins A, C, E, zinc, astragals, aloe vera and beta-glucan.

Junk foods and sugar should not be part of your diet if you are trying to prevent cold and flu viruses. Other harmful addictive substances and tobacco can damage the body's immune system.

Exercise is also a highly significant and well-known method of preventing colds and flu. People, who run often and participate regularly in any form of exercise, very rarely get any type of cold or flu virus.

Excessive levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, can be associated with some cancers, post-traumatic stress disorder, Type two diabetes, anxiety and depression. Health practitioners recommend natural stress management strategies as an important part of maximum health.

Why not try some Mangosteen Juice. It's get me from getting sick for more than two years. There's was only one day I didn't feel so great, but it must have been allergies because I felt fine the next day. :)
